A component part of kids ar raised in melodious families, just few had the entree to music that Ben Kweller had. Nils Lofgren was one of Kweller's father's buddies during Lofgren's years with Bruce Springsteen. Young Kweller, non even honest-to-goodness sufficiency for kindergarten at the time, would stress to be like the historied guitar player when he picked up his own toy version of the instrument. He played the pianoforte since his identical early childhood and by the foresighted time of vIII had gradatory from toy dog guitars and simply tapping the ivories to penning his possess tunes. The undermentioned year, he received a nod of boost from Billboard mag when it conferred an honorable reference on the youthfulness for his entranceway into its annual songwriters competition. By the time he hit his stripling years, Kweller was complete on the guitar and as well played the drums. As many teenagers do, he pulled together a band, which he dubbed Mirage. He followed up with groups named Green Eggs & Ham and Foxglove.

In 1993, with Bryan Blur on bass and John Kent on drums, Kweller established Radish. The grouping made its german mark on the local Dallas panorama, non far from Greenville, TX, where Kweller was raised. In 1994, the musical wunderkind and his outfit pose out the EP Hello through Practice Amp Records. That same year, the tag released the album Dizzy. Roger Greenawalt, a producer, stepped into the image in 1995. He lED Radish through the production of a demo that lED to the inking of a sign with Mercury during the summertime of 1996. The judge released Restraining Bolt the undermentioned springtime, and Kweller lED Radish through European and American tours and newmarket on late-night telecasting talk shows, including The Conan O'Brian Show and Late Night With David Letterman. When Radish disbanded in 1999, Kweller headed due east, in the spring, to Guilford, CT, where he stayed only a short time in front relocating to Brooklyn, NY, the undermentioned November. Not yet 20 age honest-to-goodness, he sign with Island Records as a solo creative person. He spent clip touring with such artists as Juliana Hatfield, Guster, Kristin Hersh, and Evan Dando. He besides collaborated with Ben Folds and Ben Lee for a series of dates down under in 2003 and appeared on Folds' limited edition EP The Bens. Kweller's sophomore endeavour, the often more muted On My Way, followed in spring 2004. Two long time by and by, he returned with his self-titled tierce album, on which he played all the instruments.

Link Between E. coli And Distillers' Grains Studied By Researchers

A research team headed by Kansas State University E. coli O157:H7 expert T.G. Nagaraja has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study both the connectedness between feeding distillers' grains and E. coli 0157:H7 in kine and several strategies to reduce the presence of the naturally occurring pathogen in the animals.

The radical has received a $939,220 National Research Initiative in Food Safety grant. Nagaraja, a university distinguished professor of microbiology, aforesaid the military issue of kernel safety is receiving full attention from both researchers and the meat industry and is being addressed.

"This research project will greatly enhance our understanding of the take relationship between dietary distillers' grains and E. coli 0157:H7 in cattle, as well as provide us with an opportunity to look at novel slipway to palliate the potential risks of feeding this valuable co-product," Nagaraja said.

Distillers' grains ar a by-product of grain alcohol produced from cereal grains that are used in cattle fertilize. They ar rich in fiber, vigour and protein.

The research team will search at shipway to reduce the amount of E. coli O157:H7 present, such as administering a probiotic microflora, an experimental vaccine and feeding john Brown seaweed, a plant shown to have an effect in reducing E. coli O157:H7 prevalence in oxen. In summation, they too will study whether eating varied amounts of the distillers' grain or devising it dry or wet has an effect on the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 detected in the feces.

Along with Nagaraja, the enquiry team includes K-State professors David Renter, Mike Sanderson and Dan Thomson, and doctoral student Megan Jacob.

The grant builds upon the long history of K-State researchers focus on food safety. An example of that exercise that has direct application to the consumer comes from sum scientist Melvin Hunt.

"Despite aid in solid food processing and provision, there is a possibility that food throne become contaminated with potentially harmful bacterium," Hunt said. "Occasional recalls of potentially contaminated undercoat beef in recent eld are a sign that safety checks are working -- hamburger lovers do not demand to give up their favorite food."

Consumers need to be mindful that recommendations for cookery ground boeuf have changed. Generations have been brought up to think that when ground beef browns, it's cooked. That's no longer true, Hunt said.

In the mid-1980s, K-State kernel science researchers were asked to study the possibleness of reducing the percentage of fat in ground beef without compromising sense of taste and texture.

As the K-State researchers studied ground kick with differing proportions of fat, they observed how the meats cooked and noted that some ground beef browned prematurely, ahead it had reached the safe-to-eat temperature of one hundred sixty F.

The coloring material of essence depends on the atomic number 8 in the muscle cells, Hunt aforesaid. As an example, he explained that fresh ground beef is bright loss because oxygen is incorporated into the meat as it is ground. As the meat ages, it loses o, which causes the color to change. The atomic number 8 in the muscle is carried by myoglobin, which is similar to hemoglobin that carries oxygen in humans.

Observations during the study prompted researchers to recommend that temperature -- not color -- should be used as a test for doneness, Hunt said.

In a eatery, consumers ar advised to order a ground beef patty cooked to at least medium, or one hundred sixty F. At home, they are advised to train end-point temperature with a meat thermometer.

"Using a meat thermometer is the only sure way to tell if kernel is in good order cooked," Hunt said.

The K-State researchers ar among the more than 150 K-State experts working in the arena of food safety, animal health and agricultural health. More than $70 million has been consecrate to research in these areas since 1999.

Due to a wide range of influences, restless/relentless creative energies, and a supporting draw that's too legion to list in full, random peeks into the catalog of the Glen Johnson-helmed Piano Magic -- from super limited edition singles on Spanish independents to uncut soundtracks -- seldom result in the same thing double. Started in the mid-'90s by Johnson, Dominic Chennell, and Dick Rance with the purpose to base their recordings around a small lens nucleus and whomever would like to contribute -- victimisation 4AD break Ivo Watts-Russell's This Mortal Coil as something of a templet -- the material released by Piano Magic has ranged from arty baroque period pop to childly electronic knob-twiddling and whatever points you bottom and can't recall of in between. The solitary thread operative through Piano Magic's records, aside from Johnson's presence, is a mother wit of wistfulness. Johnson has explained his desire to soundtrack memories, and with that, Piano Magic has launch their niche.

One early hope of Piano Magic was to avoid the live element. However, when their first single, 1996's Incorrect French, was awarded Single of the Week in Melody Maker, the initial triple matte obligated to wager out in support of it. Along with Paul Tornbohm, the grouping played their first gig and opted not to play any of the real constitute on their records. They besides made no attempt whatsoever to sound anything like their records, so betting odds were pretty skillful that a few curious concert-goers were perplexed after reversive from the shops and auditory modality the studio apartment incarnation of the outfit.

"Gestural" to Che, the label that released Wrong French, the grouping kicked out two more than singles (with one issued on Wurlitzer Jukebox) prior to releasing their first full record, Popular Mechanics, in November 1997. Including some of the additional personnel office featured on the preceding singles, such as vocalists Raechel Leigh and Hazel Burfitt and instrumentalist Martin Cooper, the record threw together some antecedently released real along with a clutch of new songs. As uneven as the record is, its mysteriousness provokes replay later on replay. The band left Che, having been disappointed with their want of exertion. Not surprisingly, the incessant financial flux soon got the c. H. Best of the label.

In 1999, a crazy slew of singles and EPs for labels care Staalplaat, Darla, and Bad Jazz -- including a split single with Matmos for Lissy's -- encircled the release of the second record album, Gloomy Birth Weight (Projectile Girl). Thanks to simply a small more centering and a higher level of tone from beginning to end, the record book is often regarded by fans as their best ferment. In addition to nearly of the prior suspects, Caroline Potter, Alexander Perls, Matt Simpson, Jen Adam, Simon Rivers (Bitter Springs), David Sheppard (Department of State River Widening), and Peter Astor (the Weather Prophets, the Wisdom of Harry) figured into the serve of devising it.

The following class was unmatched of Piano Magic's least fecund, but it inactive spawned a remix EP for Germany's Morr Music and the rather conceptual uncut Artists' Rifles, which bases its national matter in the first World War. It's the group's most consistent work in footing of good. It features none of the electronics heard on prior releases, rather focusing on delicate interplay betwixt drums, guitars, and the cello work of Adrienne Quartly. At some point prior to its recording, Miguel Marin was added to the group's lineup ostensibly as a permanent member.

In 2001, Piano Magic was commissioned to score Spanish theatre director Bigas Luna's Son de Mar. The theatre director had heard Down Birth Weight in a record shop and was impressed enough to ask them to provide music for the film. Peaceful, lulling, breezy, and wholly implemental, the grudge demonstrates Piano Magic's amazing image. Released by 4AD, Son de Mar spawned a trade between the two, and the group began working on the proper followup to Low Birth Weight by and by in the year. To satiate fans and get at hardcore vinyl collectors, Rocket Girl released Seasonally Affective, an thoroughgoing double-disc compilation of singles. Writers Without Homes was finally realized and released in mid-2002. Piano Magic left 4AD presently after, cathartic The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic in 2003 on Spain's Green UFOs judge and Malcontent in 2005 on Darla.

With the exception of a few brief chicago in Russia, Portugal, and Belgium, the band exhausted the bulk of the following class touring Italy. Another 12" vinyl radical record, Never It Will Be the Same Again (featuring contributions from conceptual artist Bojan Sarcevic), was released during this time. Piano Magic returned to the studio apartment in former 2006, and their ninth full-length, Part Monster, hit stores the following summer.
